International Currach Championships Return to the Front Shore This August
Get the last weekend of August in the diary: the Annual International Currach Championships come back to Warrenpoint on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th August, hosted by the Carlingford Lough Currach Club on the front shore beside the Baths.
If you’ve never watched a currach race, you’re in for a treat. These are the traditional Irish boats — light wooden frames that crews muscle through the water at a fair old clip — and when a dozen of them go hammer and tongs across the lough with the Mournes behind them, it’s some sight.
Crews travel from all over Ireland and beyond for the weekend, and it’s free to watch from the shore. Bring the family, bring a flask, and if the club runs their usual “come and try it” sessions, have a go yourself — sure what’s the worst that can happen? (You get wet. The worst that can happen is you get wet.)
