Narrow Water Bridge: Pylons Rising Over the Lough

If you’ve driven the Newry road lately you’ll have seen it for yourself: the Narrow Water Bridge is no longer a line on a drawing. The pylons are rising over the water, and the project team confirm the €102 million cross-border bridge remains on time and on budget for completion in late 2027.

The next piece of the jigsaw is being built far from the lough: fabrication of the rolling bascule span — the section that lifts to let tall ships through — is underway in Belgium, with delivery by sea expected next spring. Once the cable stays go in and the deck is assembled, the Mournes and the Cooleys will be a short stroll apart.

For Warrenpoint, this is the biggest change to our corner of the lough in a generation — a walking and cycling link to Omeath at the very spot the old ferry crossed for over a century. It’s a fitting next chapter for the Narrows: our history of Warrenpoint has eight hundred years of comings and goings at that pinch-point, from Norman keep to now.
